I. Educational Objectives
The specialty of Translation and Interpreting is intended to cultivate innovative, professional, and interdisciplinary talents who can meet the needs of social and economic development locally and nationally. Graduates from this specialty excel in both moral integrity and professional ability, with a sound command of the English language and a strong cross-cultural communicative competence. Graduates from this major are supposed to be proficient in both English and Chinese and master the techniques of translation and interpreting between them. They should be qualified for translation and interpreting tasks in fields such as diplomacy, business, education, mass media, law, international cultural interaction, and scientific and technological exchange. They can get employed by government organs, foreign affairs institutions, foreign trade companies, foreign enterprises, translation firms, news agencies and publishing houses, travel agencies, hotels, etc. in such jobs as business management, business translation and business negotiation or in such roles as business secretary, public relation worker and tour guide. They can also work in schools, English training institutions, or colleges as teachers or researchers.
II. Graduation Requirements
This major emphasizes the cultivation of basic theory, basic knowledge, basic abilities (skills), healthy personality, comprehensive quality and innovation spirit; creates conditions for students to fully participate in activities like teaching reforms, scientific research and social services, etc.; helps students to discover and develop their own interest and abilities, and maximize their intelligence and potentials by participation; emboldens them to face challenges, keep on exploring, strive for progress, and pursue the excellence; provides them conditions to cultivate their ability of working independently and working in a team, and push them to form the habit of lifelong learning and autonomous learning.
After four years of systematic study, graduates from this major must meet the following standard for graduation:
1. Knowledge: Mastery of basic knowledge of English and Chinese, an understanding of major theories and fundamental knowledge of the translation and interpreting discipline, and familiarity with the national conditions of China and major English-speaking countries and with western culture.
2. Qualities: High proficiency in both English and Chinese; familiarity with China-western cultural differences; command of basic theoretic knowledge and skills concerning English-Chinese translation and interpreting; practical ability to handle translation and interpreting tasks in such fields as diplomacy, business, education, mass media, law and international cultural and scientific and technological exchanges; essential qualities for professional interpreters and translators, sound moral integrity, and capability of doing research work and withstanding mental pressure.
3. Abilities: Sound ability for both oral and written expression in English; high capability of translating and interpreting materials regarding diplomacy, business, education, mass media, law, culture, science, technology, etc.; skills for using modern information technology to acquire desired information; and reasonable ability for critical thinking, professional work and academic research.
4. Professional norms: A strong sense of social responsibility with basic knowledge of the humanities and social sciences to understand and comply with the professional ethics and norms and fulfill their responsibilities in practice.
5. Team work: The ability to undertake the role of individuals, team members and the team head in the multidisciplinary background.
6. Communication: The ability of effective communication and exchange in English, including writing reports and designing documents, presentation speech, clear expression or response to commands. An international vision to communicate under the cross-cultural background.
7. Lifelong learning: An awareness of autonomous learning and lifelong learning to be able to learn constantly and adapt to the development of society.
Ⅲ. Characteristics of the Specialty
This specialty is geared to cultivating high-caliber professional Chinese-English translators and interpreters, focusing on developing students’ ability to use the English language proficiently and to handle Chinese-English translation and interpreting tasks efficiently. Advanced educational and pedagogical ideas and means are adopted to foster students’ translation and interpreting skills in such fields as science & technology, diplomacy, business, education, mass media, law and culture, Importance is attached to the cultivation of competence for cross-cultural communication, and ability to conduct independent research and adjust to new work environment.
