Ⅰ. Educational Objectives

The specialty of Japanese aims to cultivate high-quality innovative and application-oriented talents who can meet the needs of social and economic development locally and nationwide. Apart from scientific view about the world, life and value, good professional ethics and strong sense of social responsibility, graduates from this specialty are equipped with systematic knowledge of the Japanese language, literature and culture, a proficient mastery of Japanese in the aspects of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation. Furthermore, they are also supposed to master the relevant knowledge in the humanities and social sciences together with natural sciences, and basic methods for scientific research. Coupled with international vision and innovational consciousness, they are well qualified for posts in government organs, foreign affairs institutions, foreign trade companies, foreign enterprises, foreign financial agencies, business management companies, translation firms, news agencies and publishing houses, travel agencies, hotels, etc. in such jobs as business management, business translation and business negotiation or in such roles as business secretary, foreign business agent, public relation worker and tour guide. They can also work in schools or colleges as teachers or researchers.

 

 

 

Ⅱ. Graduation Requirements

During the cultivation process in this major, we lay emphasis on the cultivation of basic theory, knowledge, ability (skills), healthy personality, together with a comprehensive quality and innovation spirit. Conditions will be created for students to fully participate in the teaching reform, scientific research and social services, etc.. Students are encouraged to discover and develop their own interests and abilities, and maximize their intelligence and potentials by participation. They are also emboldened to face challenges, keep exploring, strive for progress, and pursue excellence. Conditions are provided to encourage students to develop the ability of working independently and working in a team, to help them form the habit of lifelong learning and autonomous learning.

After four years of systematic study, graduates from this major must meet the following standard for graduation:

1. Knowledge: Mastery of the basic knowledge of the Japanese language and culture, a clear understanding of the Japanese society, its traditional culture and corporate culture, and a good command of the knowledge of business etiquette and trade related to Japan; 

2. Qualities: The competence to participate in Japan-related commercial activities and foreign affairs, and the ability to translate and interpret between Chinese and Japanese; a solid command of Japanese and English; and the ability to use Japanese in practice, conduct autonomous learning in Japanese, independently analyze and solve problems in Japanese, and adapt to new working environment; basic competence to conduct scientific research such as the skills in retrieving literature, searching for references and obtaining information about Japan by means of modern information technology; good professional ethics and rigorous innovative awareness;

3. Abilities: Good proficiency in Japanese listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating, with the overall proficiency reaching JLPT N1 or above; sound ability to conduct Sino-Japanese cross-cultural communications and business operations in the Japanese context; the competence to finish internship and Japanese thesis writing independently.

4. Professional norms: A strong sense of social responsibility with basic knowledge of the humanities and social sciences to understand and comply with the professional ethics and norms and fulfill their responsibilities in practice.

5. Team work: The ability to undertake the role of individuals, team members and the team head in the multidisciplinary background; the competence to independently undertake or partake in college students' innovation projects, Japanese club activities and professional competence competitions.

6. Communication: The ability of effective communication and exchange in Japanese, including writing reports and designing documents, presentation speech, clear expression or response to commands, on-site interpreting, translation, business activities, etc.. An international vision to communicate under the cross-cultural background.

7. Lifelong learning: An awareness of autonomous learning and lifelong learning to be able to learn constantly and adapt to the development of society.

 

 

 

. Characteristics of the Specialty

The major intends to cultivate high-quality innovative and application-oriented talents with an emphasis on Japanese language and a combination of business and commerce. With the application of advanced idea of education administration, this major will lay a solid foundation in Japanese; improve humanistic spirit and cultural qualities, self-learning abilities and capabilities to apply what they learn in practice, to help them understand Japanese corporate culture and equip them with the mind and foundation to communicate among different cultures, so as to be qualified for jobs in translation, teaching, research, management, foreign affairs and foreign trade.

(1) Talents Education is closely connected with local economic development and practical needs

The teaching content, course cases and methodology will focus on the practical issues related to local enterprises, promoting excellent disciplines and development of excellent textbooks, encouraging teachers to devote more of their researches on the up-to-date issues in Guangdong economic development, giving more attention to the specific problems encountered by local enterprises. A quality evaluation system for student cultivation and a dynamic tracking system for graduate adaptability, which takes enterprises, colleges and graduates as the main participants, will be established to cater for the demand of professional personnel in the development of manufacturing industries in Guangdong province.

(2) We emphasize both theoretical knowledge and practical application abilities

Establish language practice base and social practice base which will be regularly visited for feedbacks; Hire entrepreneurs from foreign companies to give regular lectures; improve teacher’s teaching abilities in demonstrating practical knowledge; build up a mechanism for teachers to conduct international exchanges for improving their teaching competence.

(3) The experiment-teaching platform and industry-academy cooperation base

Develop a close cooperation with enterprises by building up industry-academy cooperation bases; gradually nurture student’s application abilities, management awareness and innovation spirit through social practices, and cultivate their perceptional sensitivity and thinking abilities about languages and cultures.
