Introduction to the Major of Translation and Interpreting

Educational Objectives: This major is aimed at cultivating innovative, professional, and interdisciplinary talents who can satisfy the needs of social and economic development. The graduates are supposed to excel in both moral integrity and professional ability. They will be proficient in the English language, know the Western cultures, and have strong cross-cultural communicative competence. They ought to have a good command of both Chinese and English.

Characteristics: This major is geared to cultivating high-caliber professional Chinese-English translators and interpreters, focusing on developing students’ ability to use the English language proficiently and to handle bilingual translation and interpreting between Chinese and English efficiently. Advanced educational and pedagogical ideas and means are adopted to foster students’ translation and interpreting skills in such fields as science & technology, diplomacy, business, education, mass media, law and culture. Importance is attached to the cultivation of competence for cross-cultural communication, and ability to conduct independent research and adjust to new work environment.

Educational Model: There is an integration of in-class teaching and out-of-class innovation in our educational model. Western mainstream educational ideas are adopted, such as interactive teaching, reflective teaching and Action Learning Theory. We make use of off-campus practice bases and teaching facilities like network platform for foreign language teaching, simultaneous interpreting laboratory and CAT laboratory to cultivate high-caliber professional Chinese-English translators. Core Courses of the Major: Comprehensive English, Advanced English, English Listening, Oral English, English Reading, English Writing; An Introduction to Translation, E-C/C-E Translation(1), E-C/C-E Translation(2),  E-C/C-E Interpreting, Consecutive Interpreting, Basic Skills for Simultaneous Interpreting, Criticism & Appreciation of Translated Works, Scientific & Technical Translation; A Brief History of British Literature &Selected Readings, A Brief History of American Literature &Selected Readings; Inter-Cultural Communication, etc.

Employment: The graduates are qualified to work as translators, secretaries, English editors, journalists, guide-interpreter and other jobs in government offices, foreign enterprises, translation companies, publishing houses, tourist agencies, premium hotels, etc. Besides, they can work in educational institutions. Some students choose to further their study for their master’s degree or doctor's degree.
